Stanmore was named by a prosperous saddler, John Jones, who purchased land in 1835 where Newington College now stands and called it the Stanmore Estate. Jones named it after his birthplace of Stanmore, now a North West suburb of London. Stanmore railway station is on the Airport, Inner West & South Line of the Sydney Trains network. Stanmore has a small shopping centre beside Stanmore railway station. Commercial developments also run along the length of Parramatta Road.
Sporting and recreation facilities in Stanmore are limited to a handful of small parks and playgrounds including Weekley Park, Crammond Park and Montague Gardens. Stanmore is a quiet town except for some occasional plane flying by. The leafy streets are soothing to the busiest of minds. Stanmore is a heritage suburb and even if houses are demolished, new buildings have to conform to the rules that must retain a facade in keeping with the heritage of the suburb. Every week the local heritage organises walks to view the architecture of the suburb and trace the lives of the many famous people born here, including: former Prime Minister, Harold Holt; actress Noelene Brown; Sir Asher Joel; Leo Schofield etc.
